During our third year of training at Bath Spa, Liam Atwood and I performed in a play called Semi-Monde by Noel Coward at the Ustinov Studio, Bath and Santa Monica College, LA. Liam played a character called Jerome and I played a character called Owen. Within the play the two of them, accompanied by Owens wife Tanis and Jerome’s daughter Norma, went to the south of France on a holiday. They would have played tennis, drink cocktails, go for long walks, drink cocktails, eat food, drink cocktails, go to the casino, drink more cocktails and go shopping. And that’s just the first day. These events are never shown within the play just talked about. This is the back story to the latest project I have been working on, Semi-Monde: Années Folles.
This summer Liam and I went to the south of France on holiday, just to relax and enjoy the sun. However, this sparked an opportunity that we both couldn’t refuse. We had to be creative and use these two characters from Semi-Monde and create a ‘what actually happened in the south of France’. This is where Semi-Monde: Années Folles (Wild Years) was born. We wrote the script and found a beautiful location in a small French village and filmed. We had minimal equipment and a couple of assistants to help. We made do, and I am pretty happy with the outcome. If you haven’t seen it or want to watch it again click the link bellow…
Noel Coward wrote Semi-Monde to show people the lives of the High Socialists in the 1920’s and we want to use that at the heart of future projects under the name, Semi-Monde: Années Folles. A passion project that will hopefully move on to something bigger.
